12 Must Do’s When Starting Your Marriage Celebrant Business + 6 MORE

Table of Contents

1. Apply for an ABN for your Marriage Celebrant Business

Firstly, choose a business name, make sure it is still available, and apply for an Australian Business Number (ABN). This unique identifier is necessary for tax purposes and establishes your business as a legitimate entity. It also allows you to invoice clients and claim expenses related to your celebrant services. A week or two after you’ve registered you’ll receive a letter with your brand new ABN. Woo!

2. Set Up Your Celebrant Website and Domain Name

Secure a domain name that reflects your business (eg. marryusgary.com.au) and set up a professional website. Be sure to pick a domain name that finishes in .au as this refers to Australia and is most helpful for the search engines.

You can build your celebrant website yourself through programs like WordPress or Squarespace for about $200-300 a year, or pay a professional to build it for you and save yourself the hassle. Your website should showcase your services, provide contact information, and include testimonials from satisfied clients.

Essentially all marketing roads will lead prospective couples to your website, so be sure to have your location and contact form easily accessible. A well-designed website will attract engaged couples, build your credibility, and generate more leads than you can handle. And having a dedicated business website definitely looks more professional than just a Facebook Page or Instagram account. All TCS members receive a discount on a Celebrant Website Build from a professional web developer, and we also have helpful beginners guides to Search Engine Optimization and generating leads through Google.

3. Invest in a Celebrant PA System

Don’t be the celebrant at a wedding that no one can hear! A quality Celebrant PA system ensures that your voice is heard clearly during ceremonies, and makes you look and sound professional. We recommend buying a battery operated PA System with a PA stand, and a high quality wireless microphone. Be sure to buy products that suit the geographic zone that you work in as some microphone receivers are better than others in certain areas. And bluetooth microphones can cause problems at indoor ceremonies.

We offer helpful advice to all our members, and huge discounts on Starter Celebrant PA Packages including a battery PA system, wireless microphone, receiver, backpack, cover and more.

4. Get Celebrant Insurance

Protect yourself and your business with the appropriate insurance. We recommend Public Liability Insurance and Professional Indemnity Insurance as essential cover for any accidents or damages that may occur during a wedding.

All The Celebrant Society Members receive Celebrant Public Liability Insurance and Professional Indemnity Insurance as part of their membership, and are issued an annual Certificate of Currency. Note: you as the celebrant may be required to provide a Certificates of Currency to operate at certain wedding venues as part of their terms and insurance cover. Always be sure to have a current insurance policy when running your celebrant business! We cover celebrant, funeral celebrancy, vow renewals, naming days and wedding expos in Australia and New Zealand.

5. Open a Celebrant Business Bank Account

Keep your finances organised by opening a dedicated business bank account, and keeping it separate from your personal bank accounts. This will help you manage your income and expenses more effectively and simplify tax reporting. Reduce your headaches at tax time by creating a separate celebrant business bank account. We recommend ING or any bank that will give you a $0 fee transaction account. ING also has the highest savings interest rate at the time of writing this, which will be helpful when your business is booming and the cash just keeps stacking up 🙂 We also recommend finance App HNRY to manage expenses, super, tax, gst and offer free trails in the members discount area.

6. Join a Celebrant Network, Federation, Institute or Celebrant Society

Joining a Celebrant network or professional association offers numerous benefits depending on which one you choose. Here at The Celebrant Society, we are a thriving community of over 480 celebrants from all over Australia who provide support, insurance, a members-only ask anything FB Group, business resources, how-to videos, conferences, meet-ups, marketing help and networking opportunities. As a member, you’ll gain access to exclusive discounts, professional development workshops, and marketing tools to help grow your business. We also offer discounts on advanced courses in How to Become a Wedding MC, and Funeral Celebrant Training.

Our catch cry is ‘Community Over Competition’ with a community that embraces kindness, support, and encouragement while offering connections with like-minded and industry leading professionals. Being part of a supportive community is unbelievably helpful when you have a problem that needs solving, need an emergency cover, need to vent, or winter has hit and your bookings are starting to dry up! Find out more about joining The Celebrant Society Here. The Celebrant Society is Australia’s most active celebrant network, built on community, connection, and collaboration.

7. Connect with Other Celebrants and Grow Your Celebrant Network

Meeting other celebrants can be incredibly valuable and a lot of fun! Attend local meet-ups, workshops, and Celebrant industry events to share experiences, swap stories, and build lasting friendships. Networking with your peers in a supportive celebrant network not only provides support and inspiration but can also open doors to new opportunities and collaborations. Plus, who better to understand the joys and challenges of being a celebrant than other celebrants? Within The Celebrant Society’s celebrant network, members support one another, share resources, and celebrate every win, with local leaders all across Australia.

8. Establish Your Social Media Presence as a Celebrant

Social media is a powerful tool for marketing your services and engaging with potential couples. Create profiles on platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and Tik Tok to share updates, photos, videos and client testimonials. Regularly posting content and interacting with followers will help you build a strong online presence, and allows other wedding vendors to tag you. One of the great things about being in the wedding industry is that there is always a professional photographer there to capture the awesome wedding moments!!!

Are you new to the industry and don’t have any professional photos yet? Come to a TCS Conference or Branding and Bonding session, as we always have a professional photographer there to capture some headshots and promotional materials for your socials and website.

9. List Your Celebrant Services on Directories

Increase your business visibility by listing your celebrant services on online wedding directories such as The Wedding Society Directory. Wedding directories connect you with engaged couples searching for wedding professionals, making it easier for them to find and hire you.

Being listed on a wedding directory is a great way to generate leads, especially if you are just starting out and your own website hasn’t had time to rank in the search engines yet. As a Celebrant Society Member you will receive a FREE Directory Listing on The Wedding Society Directory. (Sweet!) You will also have the opportunity to add multiple locations, photos, and a welcome video, which we shoot for you at each conference.

10. Purchase a Celebrant CRM System

A Celebrant Customer Relationship Management (CRM) system helps you manage client interactions, track bookings, automate emails, send invoices, and streamline your workflow. Beginner celebrants often invest in a CRM early to stay organized and provide exceptional service to their clients. Trust me, it is much easier to set up these systems when you have 5 clients rather than 50!

A good CRM system will help you process leads, create contact forms for your website, generate invoices, create terms and conditions contracts, automate emails, request reviews, and even schedule meetings.

All TCS Members receive huge discounts on CRM systems, along with guidance and how-to videos included in their membership. In our CRM Masterclass Series, we walked through how to streamline every part of your celebrant workflow, from first enquiry to post-ceremony follow-up, using the CRM’s we’ve partnered with; 17Hats, Studio Ninja, and MyCelebrant App.

All TCS members receive exclusive 50% discount codes and access to “how-to” videos that walk you through automating your emails, forms, and invoices. It’s one of the most time-saving perks of membership.

11. Organise Your Document Folder and Order Celebrant Stationery

Purchase a professional folder to protect all your necessary documents for each ceremony. Through TCS you can order branded folders ‘from our guy’ for marriage certificates and legal paperwork and couples vows, to enhance your professional image and leave a lasting impression on clients and guests.

And be sure to order your Australian Marriage Stationery well in advance of your first wedding to make sure you have it on time for the big day. We recommend ordering the beginner’s package supplied by CanPrint.

12. Attend a Celebrant Conference

This one will change your life!!!!!!! Stay updated on industry trends and expand your knowledge by attending The Celebrant Conference presented by the Celebrant Society. The Celebrant Society’s annual conference is an excellent opportunity to learn from industry leaders, participate in workshops, and network with fellow celebrants, while getting a few photos for your socials! Our Annual Celebrant Conference is held in a different state each year, and we offer priority discounted tickets to all our members. We also sell tickets to non-members as well. Our last conference was attended by over 200 celebrants, so be sure to book in advance to secure your spot.

MORE ADVANCED TIPS

13. Create a Google Business Profile

Make sure couples can find you easily on Google. Setting up a Google Business Profile helps your name appear on local search results when couples search for “marriage celebrant near me.” Add your location, contact info, website link, and photos.

14. Collect and Showcase Client Reviews

After each wedding, kindly ask your couples to leave you a review on Google, Facebook, or your directory profile. Genuine testimonials are one of the most powerful forms of marketing for celebrants and help future couples trust you faster. Include these reviews on your website and social media, and don’t forget to respond!

15. Invest in Branding and Professional Photos

Your brand is more than a logo, it’s how couples feel about you. Over the past year, our Celebrant Conversations have covered branding essentials, and members also get discounted headshots and brand sessions at the TCS Conference and local meetups, a perfect opportunity to capture content for your website and socials. Great photos are perfect for your socials, but also the homepage on your website and about page. One good photoshoot can provide you with a year of content. Check out The Celebrant Society instagram page for some examples.

16. Build Your Authority in the Industry

The best way to grow your celebrant business is to become a visible, trusted voice in the community. Many of our members have gone on to write guest blogs, speak at TCS events, or mentor newer celebrants through the Member-to-Member Directory. This is where community becomes collaboration. We also regularly feature our members’ stories, ceremonies, and insights through Celebrant Conversations and blog spotlights, giving members more reach and recognition in the Wedding Industry across Australia. Eg. Western Australia’s Best Marriage Celebrants.

17. Double Your Income by Offering Funeral or MC Services

Once you’re established as a marriage celebrant, expand your income by offering Funeral Celebrant or Wedding MC services. These roles use similar preparation, presentation and storytelling skills, giving you steady work beyond wedding season and midweek.

Many Celebrant Society members have doubled their earnings through these pathways. We offer discounted advanced training in both areas, plus Celebrant Conversations with experienced members who share real strategies for success. Diversifying your services not only boosts income but builds confidence, credibility, and year-round demand.

18. Add Videos to Your Website

Video is one of the most powerful ways to connect with couples and showcase your personality. A short introduction video on your website helps build trust and gives potential clients a real sense of who you are.

Every Celebrant Society member attending the Annual Celebrant Conference receives a professional welcome video filmed on-site for free, ready to use on your website or socials and hosted on our YouTube Channel. It’s an easy, high-impact way to elevate your online presence and stand out in a crowded market.
